    Kay D'Evelyn La Montagne

Combining a lifelong passion for art and design with her strong background in education, Kay D’Evelyn La Montagne enjoys a successful and satisfying career as an interior designer and owner of Mountain Home.

Raised in California, Kay is a third-generation graduate of the University of
California at Berkeley, where she received her B.A. in English. She also holds a Master's Degree in Education. She and her husband, David D’Evelyn, were co-founders of two private residential high schools in California. The couple moved to Colorado in 1984, and after Dave’s death in 1993, Kay served on the steering committee for the public high school in Jefferson County, D’Evelyn Junior/Senior High School, named for her husband. Along the way, Kay put her “good eye” to work, decorating with care each of her homes, helping friends decorate theirs, and helping others stage their homes for selling.

Kay turned her talent into a career when she remarried in 1997. She ran Mountain Home, one of two stores owned by her husband, Ted La Montagne. Kay and Ted enjoyed hunting for unusual home furnishings, and they needed more space for the one-of-a-kind treasures they found. They decided to close Ted’s other store, The Hardware, a long-time local fixture located in the old Barn and Bunkhouse of the historic Hiwan Homestead in downtown Evergreen. They opened an expanded Mountain Home in its place in May 2006. The new store was their palette, featuring expansive showrooms filled with distinctive fine furniture, art and accessories. With Ted’s passing in 2009, Kay oversees the business, increasingly focusing on interior design.

Kay’s design philosophy is that her clients’ homes ultimately and uniquely reflect their tastes, desires and lifestyles.

“I love working with people,” she says. “The interesting link between education and design is listening and being perceptive enough to understand what people want, and educating them so they can reach their ultimate goals.”
